ENGL 111 Theme: United Nations - Indianapolis

COIL stands for Collaborative Online International Learning, which refers to "online learning in an international setting, with interactive involvement of students and faculty from different international and intercultural backgrounds in and outside the classroom." COIL projects are based on the involvement of teachers and students, with different geographical origins, language and culture, for the development of collaborative teaching and learning processes using online communication tools.

Ball State University's COIL program, managed by the Rinker Center for Global Affairs, offers students and faculty opportunities to engage in international collaborations through online learning. The program allows for the integration of global perspectives into coursework, fostering intercultural understanding and enhancing academic experiences. Faculty can initiate their own projects or utilize the COIL Matching Service to connect with international partners.

While not exclusively focused on COIL, Indiana University Bloomington's Global Engagement office supports various international collaborations, including COIL initiatives. The office provides resources and guidance for faculty interested in integrating global learning experiences into their courses, promoting intercultural competence among students.

In December 2024, Indiana University Indianapolis and Ivy Tech Community College submitted the final report on the Department of Education’s $310,000 Building Global Pathways grant. This initiative aimed to strengthen the global learning curriculum for first-year students at both institutions, including modules on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
