SEC Filings

"The SEC’s EDGAR database provides free public access to corporate information, allowing you to quickly research a company’s financial information and operations by reviewing registration statements, prospectuses and periodic reports filed on Forms 10-K and 10-Q. You also can find information about recent corporate events reported on Form 8-K but that a company does not have to disclose to investors."

Starting Company Research

Before you begin researching a company you need to determine:

  1. Is it public?
  2. Is it private?
  3. Is it foreign owned?
  4. Is it a subsidiary?
  5. Do you have a company name or a brand name (you will need the company name)?

Once you've answered the above questions you are ready to search. Public companies are much easier to research. They are traded publicly and must file financial reports with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) or other regulatory bodies. Everyone else is private and most information will have to come directly from them.

There are lots of published guides to companies as well as web sites which provide basic information about the finances, management and products of each company. This guide will provide access to some of them.

You may want to search beyond general directories and access periodicals for current factual and editorial information. Databases available through the library offer journals, newsletters and third party reports.
