Study Skills 101 - South Bend-Elkhart: Time Management

A libguide to help you learn more about how to study effectively

5 Time Tips

Here are some general time management tips to keep in mind when you are studying:

1. Prioritize

2. Schedule review time

3. Study difficult subjects first

4. Use lists

5. Include breaks

6. Do Not Cram!

Setting Goals

Setting goals for yourself can also help to manage your time.  If you know that you have a big chemistry test next week and you want to start preparing for it now, setting a goal of studying for 30 minutes every day can help you to retain the information and keep you from stressing out.

Make sure you are setting SMART goals:

Specific

Measurable

Attainable

Realistic

Trackable

And don't forget to reward yourself when you accomplish a goal.  Having a set reward, such as watching TV for 30 minutes after studying for you chemistry test for a half hour can push you to finish what you started.

This also works for small goals too.  If you have to read 100 pages for your literature class by tomorrow, try reading 10 pages at a time, and then rewarding yourself by having a small snack or checking your email.  Just don't break for too long!

What is Time Management?

Do you  ever experience that feeling of utter panic when you realize a mid-term paper you thought was due next week is suddenly due tomorrow and now you are pulling an all-nighter just to get something passable to your teacher?  Does it seem like this exact thing is happening more and more to you?  You might have some trouble with time management.

Scheduling

Having a written down, updated schedule may seem like a lot of work, but setting it up and maintaining it are not all that hard.  You just have to remember to do it every day!

Calendars:

Use a monthly calendar to keep track of when major tests and papers are due.  Make sure to keep it somewhere visible so that you can keep an eye on what is due when.

Agendas:

It may seem dorky, but having a pocket agenda or planner can help you remember when smaller assignments are due and any other extracurricular activities that you might be involved in.

Daily To Do:

At some point, create for yourself a to do list for the next day.  It could be done before you go to bed or that morning, but having a scheduled day can do wonders for keeping yourself on track.  Make sure to schedule in classes and extracurriculars, but then, start to add in time to do homework, study time, and breaks.  Don't forget to add in time to eat!
