Graphic Novels & Guides at Valparaiso Library

What is the difference between comics, graphic novels, and graphic guides?

Comics are short stories that use sequential art.  They are sold in series.

Graphic Novels are book length comics that are written in a variety of genres, such as non-fiction and fantasy.  There are as many genres and sub-genres as traditional books. The stories in graphic novels are more complex than comics.  An important category to note is Manga.  According to the website Get Graphic, Manga is the Japanese word for ‘comic.’  In the United States, the word has been used to refer to a style.

A Graphic Guide uses comic or graphic novel style to present information and ideas such as chemistry in a visual format.
