Bibliographic Citations

Tips to Keep in Mind!

  • The article title takes non-standard capitalization; the title of the journal takes regular capitalization.
  • The volume number is in italics.
  • For multiple authors, list all authors and link them with an ampersand (&).
  • Use the Last name, F. format.
  • Use a comma between the author's first initial and the ampersand.

 

Citation with One Author

Last name, F. M. (Year). Article title. Journal TitleVolume#(Issue#), Page#.

Citation with Two Authors

Last name, F. M., Last name, F. M., & Last name F. M. (Year). Article title. Journal TitleVolume#(Issue#), Page#.

Citation with Multiple Authors

In-Text Citations for One Author

  • Signal phrases use past tense. 
  • A "p." precedes the page number.
  • In the end citation, commas separate the elements. 
  • A period goes after the end parenthesis.

Signal phrase: Last name (Year) indicated... (p. Page#).

Davis (2010) indicated... (p. 23). 

End citation: (Last name, Year, p. Page#).

(Davis, 2010, p. 23).

In-Text Citation with Multiple Authors

  • The first time the source is used, use the FIRST MENTION version. After that, no matter what type of citation, the ALL OTHER MENTIONS version will be used 

*this applies only for 3-5 authors in APA

  • When there are more than 8 authors, name the first six followed by an ellipses and end with the final author.  

Signal phrase (FIRST MENTION): First author's Last name, Second author's Last name and Third author's Last name (Year) said... (p. Page#).

Kirk, Nichols, and Foster (2001) said... (p. 321). 

Signal phrase (ALL OTHER MENTIONS): First author's Last name et al. (Year) said... (p. Page#).

  • APA uses "and in the signal phrase and the ampersand (&) in the end citation
