Research tips

  • Researching music often overlaps with topics in history, sociology, literature, biography, or technology.
  • Below are resources focused on music, and tips to focus your search on music within general resources.
  • As with any research, you need to identify the key words of your topic to begin, and you will likely refine these terms as you search.
  • Once you find a book, article, or website, use the "find" command (ctrl F) with your key words to locate relevant passages.

Music Reference

Credo Reference includes excellent dictionaries of music as well as many general dictionaries and encyclopedias. Try the Harvard Dictionary of Music for styles, terms, and topics and the Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music for information about a composer or performer. To find these music dictionaries, on the home page choose Browse from the dropdown menu choose All Titles and find them in the H section of the a-z list. Then use the Search within this title search box.
