What is a Personal Librarian? The personal librarian program is an integrated library service to help support the research process. It is a proactive strategy to incorporate information literacy into the learning process and places the library where the students are. Using the personal librarian program is a great way to extend students' access to research assistance after an information literacy session and provides more consistent and personalized assistance for your students. A personal librarian is especially useful for online classes or ones that involve a research component. This program is a partnership with faculty that will integrate the library into the curriculum and work together towards a solution to an information problem. I can be as active in the course to the extent the faculty member prefers.

Add library contact information to the IvyLearn classroom allowing students to contact the library directly from the classroom.
Create a reading list (bibliography) from library resources as a supplement to or replacement for a textbook. (Also available in PDF).
Create a course Library Research Guide that provides sample keywords and searches to help start the research process.
Create assignment and subject specific announcements to the IvyLearn classroom that help with research, promote library resources, critical thinking skills, and use of citations.
Create a subject or course specific guide that can be linked from the IvyLearn classroom. This guide can contain articles, videos, and books from the library collection, subject specific websites, OER resources, and tutorials on how to use databases.
Provide in person or online research consultations with students to help narrow topics, brainstorm ideas, identify keywords, provide database guidance, and answer citation questions. This can be a mandatory or voluntary part of the class.
Create pre and post-tests to assess research skills. These can be extra credit, mandatory, or voluntary.

Clearing the Path for First-Generation College Students comprises a wide range of studies that explore the multidimensional social processes and meanings germane to the experiences of first-generation college students before and during their matriculation into institutions of higher education. The chapters offer timely, empirical examinations of the ways that these students negotiate experiences shaped by structural inequities in higher education institutions and the pathways that lead to them. This volume provides insight into the dilemmas that arise from the transformation of students' class identities in pursuit of upward mobility, as well as their quest for community and a sense of "belonging" on college campuses that have not been historically designed for them. While centering first-generation status, this collection also critically engages the ways in which other dimensions of social identity intersect to inform students' educational experiences in relation to dynamics of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, gender, and immigration. Additionally, this book takes a holistic approach by exploring the ways in which first-generation college students are influenced by, and engage with, their families and communities of origin as they undertake their educational careers.
Equity and Inclusion in Higher Education by
Americans' perception of college students does not correlate with the reality of the rich diversity seen on university campuses. Over 60% of Americans believe the average age of a college student is 20 years old but, in fact, it's 26.4 years old. Demographics in the classroom are shifting and instructors bear a responsibility to adjust their teaching style and curriculum to be inclusive for all students. Equity and Inclusion for Higher Education Strategies for Teaching, edited by Rita Kumar and Brenda Refaei, details the necessity for an inclusive curriculum with examples of discipline-specific activities and modules. The intersectionality of race, age, socioeconomic status, and ability all embody the diversity college instructors encounter in their classrooms. Through the chapters in this book, the contributors make apparent the "hidden curriculum," which is taught implicitly instead of explicitly. The editors focus on learner-centered environments and accessibility of classroom materials for traditionally marginalized students; a critical part of the labor needed to create an inclusive curriculum. This text provides instructors with resources to create equity-based learning environments. It challenges instructors to see beyond Eurocentric curriculums and expand their pedagogy to include intercultural competence. The contributors challenge the student/instructor dichotomy and embrace collaboration between the two to construct a curriculum that fits all students' needs. The resources and examples in this book demonstrate the importance of inclusion and equity in the classroom. A companion community page provides examples and tools from the editors and contributing authors, which allows for readers to add materials from their own classrooms. This book and collaborative toolkit allow instructors to begin intentional practice of an inclusive curriculum and implement changes to promote respect for diversity.
Faculty Development by
Faculty Development: Creating a Collaborative Culture in Community Colleges addresses how faculty developers work with changes and challenges in teaching within the community college context. Using a multi-case study design based on semi-structured interviews, document analysis, focus groups and surveys, the book examines faculty development within six community college contexts. Three of these case studies, conducted before the Covid-19 pandemic, attended to how the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) were pillars for faculty development. The other three case studies feature the pivot that faculty developers and faculty made at their institutions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In these cases, it is seen how faculty development shifts from long-term, sustained initiatives such as SOTL and FLCs to just-in-time (JiT) faculty development, as well as virtual and collaborative faculty development. As teaching models continue to evolve and faculty development takes hold in community colleges, this book features the role of collaboration as an essential component of faculty development, as well as what supports exist within the community college context to provide faculty with continual professional development.
