PowerPoint is the most commonly used slide show software.

Concept Maps can take many forms: 

  • Charts
  • Tables
  • Flowcharts
  • Mind Maps

Nursing Concept Maps are effective visual learning tools for content that can be broken down into categories. They can: 

  • Identify patient problems and health concerns
  • Help organize assessment data
  • Determine appropriate nursing diagnoses and interventions
  • Assess outcomes

Nursing uses specific types of concept maps: 

  • Nursing Care Concept Map 
  • Medical Diagnosis Concept Map
  • SBAR (situation, background, assessment, recommendation) Concept Map
  • Body System Concept Map

There are FREE Online Concept Maps available. Examples from MindandConceptMaps.com and UnboundMedicine.com

Concept Map Templates are available in Canva. 

Patient education should be based on the patient's educational needs, learning style, and understanding so they have the knowledge to make their manage their own health decisions or take prescribed drugs as directed. 

The library has a few resources to help with patient education materials:

  • Consumer Health Complete has content desgined to support information needs of patients. Use this database to find examples of patient education materials and medical images you can use to make your own materials. 
  • Health Source: Consumer Edition has information on many health topics including medical science, food scienceand childcare, and general health. The Image Collection in this database includes graphs, digrams, charts, and illustrations. 
  • MEDLINE with Full-Text focuses on scholarly academic resources as well as consumer medication information and patient education sheets. 

Other Resources: 

MedlinePlus is a resource for patients and their families and friends and it a service of the National Library of Medicne. They provide easy-to-read health information in multiple languages. 

Health Literacy Online will help you learn how to design health information tools for patient education. This is a resource of the US Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.
