Draft Work-Study Student Guide - Muncie

Desk Etiquette

Appropriate Behavior

  • Make friendly eye contact with everyone who comes into the Library, as well as anyone who approaches the desk, in order to make the Library a warm, welcoming place.
  • Answer questions promptly
  • Speak in a low, friendly voice
  • Get help if you cannot answer a question
  • Remain patient and calm
  • If you need to say “no”, explain why in a calm and respectful manner.
  • Always treat Library users with respect.

Inappropriate Behavior

  • being so lost in what you are doing that you are not aware of people as they enter the Library or approach the desk.  Library users should never feel like they are interrupting you.
  • wearing headphones
  • watching videos
  • playing computer games
  • excessive use of social media
  • loud talking
  • obscene language
  • extended non-work-related conversations (tell friends that you are at work and will have to talk with them another time.).
  • inappropriate dress (see below)
  • sitting at the service desk when not on the clock

Problem People

  • If a library user is rude, disruptive, or complains, tell them that you will get someone who will assist them.
  • Get the Library Assistant to take over.  If s/he is not available, get a Librarian.

Personal Belongings

  • Hang your coat on the coat rack, not on the back of the chair at the desk.
  • Make sure backpacks and bags are underneath the desk and out of the walkway.

Answering the Telephone

  • Say, "Muncie Ivy Tech Library.  How may I help you?"

Personal Calls

  • If it is necessary that you make a personal phone call, please do so in the library office or study room.
  • If you receive a call while at work, take your phone in the hall and keep it brief.
  • If you anticipate that the conversation could be lengthy, tell the caller that you will call back.
  • An excessive number of calls received during a single shift becomes disruptive and is unfair to your fellow workers.

Dress Appropriately for the Workplace

  • the college requires business casual dress, i.e., neat, clean clothing appropriate for an office setting.
  • Clothing that is not acceptable:
         hats
         shorts
         open-toe sandals
         tank tops
         ripped (etc.) jeans
  • If you are in doubt, do not wear it.

Library Rules

These are the rules that anybody in the Library is expected to follow.
