Draft Work-Study Student Guide - Muncie

Daily Tasks

1. Upon Arrival
Log onto computer with your user name and password.

  • Printer: Verify the printer setting in WorkFlows is set to the Citizen printer:

File | Print Setup | Print to a printer | Citizen Printer
  • LibAnswers : Open a browser (Chrome or Firefox) and log into LibApps/LibAnswers (https://ivytech.libanswers.com/admin/record).
Make sure to record statistics for EVERY question you are asked.
  • Cell phone: Turn the volume down.

2. Other Daily Tasks

  • Printers: Check paper levels in printers and refill as needed.
  • Supplies: Make sure all staplers, paper clips, pens, and pencils are refilled.
  • Books: Check book shelves for any books not shelved; reshelve if necessary.
  • Statistics: Every half hour, count the number of people working at computers and the number of people working at tables and record those two numbers on the calendar.
  • Shelf Reading: We keep out collection in order by shelf reading, i.e., reading the call numbers on the book spines to make sure they are in order on the shelves.  Each work-study student is required to complete the course Shelving with the Library of Congress Classification System at WebJunction.  You will be required to create an account in order to access the tutorial.  Once you have successfully completed the tutorial, print off the certificate and turn it into the Librarian.

3. Assigned Tasks: Computer Stations, Shelf-Reading, and Housekeeping
These tasks should be completed daily, except where noted.  While these tasks are important for the  upkeep of the Library, your priority is to answer people’s questions.

If you are the only person working at the Information Desk, do not do shelf reading until another student or the Library Assistant arrives since you cannot keep an eye on the desk when shelf reading.  When two students are scheduled to work, every hour you should alternate who is:

            •  sitting at the Information Desk computer, answering questions.
            •  working on assigned tasks or at the second work-study computer

4. Study Time

  • One advantage to working in the Library is that there is often time to study.  However, you are only free to study once you have completed all your assigned tasks or anything that one of the staff asks you to do.
  • Reminder: do not get so lost in your work that you fail to keep an eye on what is happening in the Library (people talking, eating, on their cell phones, etc.).
