Finding Nurse-Authored Articles

CINAHL and PubMed are two databases with specific methods for finding articles authored by nursing professionals.

CINAHL

1. Connect to the CINAHL database.

2. Enter your search terms: On the CINAHL search page, input your keywords for the topic you are researching.

3. Find the "Limit Your Results" section: Scroll down the page to locate the "Limit Your Results" panel.

4. Apply the filter: Click on either...

  • First Author is Nurse: To retrieve records where the first (primary) author is identified as a nurse.
  • Any Author is Nurse: To find records where at least one author is a nurse.

5. Click "Search."

Here is a video tutorial on how to search for articles in CINAHL with Full Text where at least one of the authors is a nurse. For more information, contact the library.

PubMed

PubMed does not have a limiter for articles authored by a nurse. However, you can construct a search for nurse authors.

  1. Connect to PubMed.

  2. In the search box enter (copy and paste) the following search exactly as it appears below:

"RN"[ad] OR "CRNA"[ad] OR "MSN"[ad] OR "APRN"[ad] OR "CNS"[ad] OR "DNP"[ad] OR "NP"[ad] OR "nursing"[ad] AND [your search term]

  1. Replace [your search term] with your actual search term!

  2. Click Search

So for example, if you wanted to search Pubmed for nurse-authored articles on "patient falls" your search would look like this:

"RN"[ad] OR "CRNA"[ad] OR "MSN"[ad] OR "APRN"[ad] OR "CNS"[ad] OR "DNP"[ad] OR "NP"[ad] OR "nursing"[ad] AND Patient Falls
