Overview

group multicultural facesWelcome to the SOCI 164 LibGuide. This guide looks into multicultural studies and general sociology resources to assist with your Semester Project.

Semester Project

Students will be required to submit a semester project at the end of the semester. Projects can be creative projects such as a podcast episode, a classic research paper, etc.  I will ask for a proposal from students to help you shape the project.

The paper MUST explore some aspect of how race and ethnicity function within society and culture. Students are expected to take a "deeper dive" on some topic we cover in the semester.

Topic Ideas:

  • Border Studies
  • Variations in Assimilation
  • American Segregation Immigration
  • Practices and Policies
  • Minority Group Resistance Movements
  • Exploration of how Race is constructed and used
  • Race, Ethnicity and Economy
  • Meaning of ideas such as "American Melting pot" and "American Dream" Exploration of a specific person that demonstrates a relationship to race and ethnicity

Project Requirements

Projects will be graded based upon:

  • Ability to incorporate ideas and concepts of race and ethnicity discussed this semester.
  • Quality of critical analysis used to analyze and critique a topic rather than simply one’s personal opinion.
  • Strength of references used and use of academic sources to support your conclusions.
    • Students must use minimum of 3-4 ACADEMIC sources (not including the text) in their paper.
  • Proper grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Proper use of citations for all quotes must be used.
  • Written options should be 4-6 pages in length using 12 point Times New Roman font.
  • LATE PROJECTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
