Google Scholar is a search engine that allows you to search for peer-reviewed articles, theses, books, technical reports, and other scholarly materials online. It can also be set up to help you find scholarly materials available full-text through Ivy Tech Library’s databases. To use Google Scholar, go to scholar.google.com.

Set Up Google Scholar to Access Ivy Tech Library Resources

1. Click Settings near the top of the page.
2. Select Library Links at the left side, then type “Ivy Tech Community College” in the box and click the blue magnifying glass button.
3. Choose the Ivy Tech listing, and click Save at the bottom of the page.

Type your search terms in the search box, or click the arrow at the right side of the box for more options for limiting the types of sources found. You can also change these limits on the left-hand side of the results page.

Click the blue magnifying glass to retrieve a list of scholarly sources matching your search terms.

Materials that are available for free will include a link to the source itself on the right side of the page. Sources available through Ivy Tech may require you to sign in with your Campus Connect username and password.

In the above example you'll see four different articles on the topic of higher education. The results list shows your search terms in bolded letters.

• Notice that the first two entries do not have Ivy Tech links at the right side. You can click the provided links for more information, but if you want the full text of these articles, you'll need to place an interlibrary loan request.
• The third article has a "Full-Text @ Ivy Tech" link at the right side. Click the link to access the complete article in one of our databases.
• For the fourth article, you have two choices. You can click the "Full-Text @ Ivy Tech" link again, or you can try the "[PDF] from usc.es" link.

Sometimes links other than "Full-Text @ Ivy Tech" will take you to complete articles, but other times they only take you to places where you can buy the articles. In this example, the "[PDF] from usc.es" link works and will take you to a complete PDF copy of the article, but the "[PDF] from springer.com" only gives you an excerpt - with an option to spend a lot of money on the full-text version.

As a student, you DO NOT need to spend money to get articles. Instead, fill out the interlibrary loan request form with as much information as you can. Make sure you enter your contact information (so we can get the article to you when it arrives) and all the details you know about the article, such as the article title, journal title, author, and date of the article. More information means there will be a better chance of getting you exactly what you want.
