Source In-Text Citation Works Cited Page Citations

Entire Website

(with editor, with author and without author)

 

 

Format:

If you are citing an entire website you may omit the page number or any other reference number. Try to use the author or editor’s name (if no author/editor use the title) in the text but if not, put it in the parenthetical citation.

 

Example (with author/editor):

In the text:

Parenthetical Citation:

(Felluga)

Format (with editor/author):

Editor, author, or compiler name. Name of Site. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), Day Month Year Published, URL. Accessed Day Month Year.

Example (with author):

Felluga, Dino. Guide to Literary and Critical Theory. Purdue U, 28 Nov. 2003, www.cla.purdue.edu/english/theory/. Accessed 10 May 2006.

Example (with editor):

Format (no author)

Name of Site. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), Day Month Year Published (if available), URL. Accessed Day Month Year.

Format:

Page Author Name (If available). “Title of the Short Work”.  Name of Site. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), Day Month Year Published (if available), URL. Accessed Day Month Year

Newspaper or Magazine Article from Website​

Format:
If no page number, just use author’s last name.

(Author last name page number).

Example: 
(Thompson)

Format:

Author Last Name, First Name. “Title of Article.” Name of Newspaper/Magazine. Day Month Year Published on website, URL. Accessed Day Month Year.

Example:

Articles from a Database and Print

Journal, Magazine or Newspaper Article from a Database

Format:


(Author last name page number).​

Example: 

(Junge and Nelson 642)

Format is the same as the print version but you need to add the name of the database and the date of your access.

Format:

Author Last Name, First Name. “Title of Article.” Name of Periodical/Journal, Volume, Number, Day Month Year Published, pages. Name of Database, URL or DOI. Accessed Day Month Year.

Example:

Langhamer, Claire. “Love and Courtship in Mid-Twentieth-Century England.” Historical Journal, Vol. 50, no.1, 2007, pp. 173-196. ProQuest, DOI:10.10107/S0018246X06005966. Accessed 27 May 2009.

Newspaper (Print Version)

If the newspaper is divided into lettered sections, provide the section designation before the page number when the newspaper does the same.

Format:
(Author last name page number).​

Editor Only No Author

Format:

Chapter or Section in a Book or Anthology​

Format:

(Author last name page number).

Example:

(Harris 25)

Format:

Author Last Name, First Name. "Title of Essay/Chapter." Title of Collection, edited by Editor's Name. Publisher, Year, Page range of entry. 

Example:

Two Authors

A work by two authors:

Name both authors in the signal phrase or in the parentheses each time you cite the work. Use the word “and” between the author’s names within the text and in the parentheses.

As Gillespie and Lerner state…(29).

(Gillespie and Lerner 29).

Format:

Author One Last Name, First Name and Author Two First Name Last Name. Title of Book. Publisher, Year of Publication. 

Example:

Gillespie, Paula, and Neal Lerner. The Allyn and Bacon Guide to Peer Tutoring. Allyn, 2000. 

Three or more Authors

For a source with more than three authors, provide the first author's last name followed by et al.

 

(Wysocki et al. 10) 

Format:

Author One Last Name, First Name, et al. Title of Book. Publisher, Year of Publication. 

Example:

Wysocki, Anne Frances, et al. Writing New Media: Theory and Applications for Expanding the Teaching of Composition. Utah State UP, 2004. 

Organization as Author​

Format:

(Organization page number)

Example:

(American Allergy Association 154)

Format:

Organization. Title of Book. Publisher, Year of Publication. 

Example:

American Allergy Association. Allergies in Children. Random, 1998. 

Indirect Source

Source In-Text Citation Works Cited Page Citation

Any Indirect Source
(A source cited in another source).

Whenever possible, find the original source and cite that.

If the original source is not available then cite the source indirectly.

Format:

Original author last name stated “whatever you’re quoting” (qtd. in author last name of the work you read page number).

Example:

Johnson stated that “your quote...” (qtd. in Henley 102).

Include only the secondary source (the book, article etc that you read) on the works cited page.

Format:

Author Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. Publisher, Year of Publication. 

Example:

Henley, Patricia. The Hummingbird House. MacMurray, 1999. 

Personal Communication

Personal Communication

(Letter, Email, or Interview)

You do not need to use page numbers for the in-text citations of personal communications.

Personal Letter Format:

(Last name of the author of letter)

(Last name of  sender of email)

Interview Format:

(Last name of the person being interviewed)

Interview Example:

(Smith)

Personal Letter Format:

Sender's Last Name, First Name. Letter to the author. Day Month Year.

Email Format:

Sender's Last Name, First Name. “Subject Heading.” Received by the recipient. Day Month Year. 

Email Example:

Personal Interview Format:

Name of the Person Being Interviewed. Personal interview. Day Month Year.
