Generative AI

Library Research & AI

Generative AI can be a useful tool for brainstorming ideas and deciding what your specific topic should be for a research paper. Be cautious using Gen AI for actual research and writing because it sometimes makes up citations and generates incorrect information. Generative AI should not be used as a replacement for learning.

You can safely use Generative AI to:

  •     Narrow down your topic ideas.
  •     Come up with keywords for searching in library databases.
  •     Construct a search strategy for those databases.
  •     Recommend possible library databases to use for your topic.

How to Fact Check AI Output

AI can hallucinate information. Do not automatically trust AI output, even if it sounds convincing.

  • If the AI output provides links, visit them to see what the source says about your topic.
    • Does the information in the source match what the AI generated?
  • Open a new browser tab and use Google and Wikipedia to verify the claim created by AI.
  • Read several websites and articles about the claim to make your conclusion.
  • Verify the claim with multiple sources to avoid bias.
