Policies - Indianapolis

General Decorum Expectations

All library visitors are responsible for behaving in alignment with library policies and Ivy Tech's Code of Student Rights & Responsibilities. All library occupants, including students, employees, and members of the community have the right to be treated with respect.

Our library and tutoring staff commit to:

Facilitate Learning.

  • Tailor research assistance and tutoring sessions to meet students' needs
  • Guide students through the learning process
  • Provide tools, strategies, and guidance that students can use to continue working independently

Create a Positive, Empowering Learning Environment.

  • Prioritize learning progress over perfection
  • Be present, patient, and professional
  • Respect students' privacy and confidentiality

Students can best prepare for support from our teams:

Be Proactive and Prepared.

  • Connect early and often
  • Bring class notes, assignment instructions, and specific questions to research and tutoring sessions
  • Genuinely attempt an assignment or task before asking for help

Be Engaged and Responsible.

  • Start and end scheduled appointments on time
  • Participate in the learning process by asking and answering questions
  • Understand that students are ultimately responsible for completing their own work

The following policies provide additional guidelines for what is and is not permissible within our campus library spaces.

Food and Drink Policy

Meals may not be eaten in the library's spaces. This helps us keep library resources and work stations clean for all visitors. Covered drinks and small, pre-packaged snacks can be enjoyed away from library computers, but please dispose of all trash in designated bins.

Because the library is not a designated eating location on campus, please arrange to pick-up and enjoy any food deliveries (Door Dash, etc.) elsewhere on campus. Alternative locations for food consumption are provided below:

Downtown: There is open seating available in the NMC building around the corner from the library.

Lawrence: There are tables located immediately outside of the Lawrence campus library, as well as in the Bear Cave.

Phone Policy

Cell Phones

Thank you for keeping cellphones set to silent or vibrate while working within the library, and for using headphones when listening to media using your phone, tablet, or computer. To maintain focused, quiet and collaborative workspaces within the library, students may checkout headphones and use the designated cellphone areas located outside the library for phone calls. Designated cellphone area locations are provided below:

LRC Library: There is open seating available in the NMC building around the corner from the library.

Lawrence Library:  Several tables and chairs are available just outside the library's entrance for phone calls.

Public Phone Access

The library's phone is not available for patron use. Students needing access to a public phone must request to use the one available at the campus's Security Command Center.

Sleeping and Camping Policy

To ensure that the library remains a safe and productive environment aligned with its intended purpose on campus, patrons are not permitted to sleep or camp within the library. For the purpose of this policy, "camping" includes the following behaviors:

  • Sleeping or napping, and/or lying down on the furniture or floor--with or without blankets
  • Using or reserving spaces within the library in ways that hinder priority usage for Ivy Tech students
  • Using restrooms for the purpose of bathing, laundry, or cleaning dishes
  • Storing personal belongings or leaving them unattended
    • Library staff are not responsible for monitoring patrons' belongings, nor are they responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen property. Unattended belongings are subject to confiscation, and will need to be picked up at the campus's Security Command Center.

Students and other library patrons needing a safe place to sleep, bathe, or eat are encouraged to check with these local community organizations and resources
