HLC Materials for April 2019: ITCC Evansville

Ivy Tech Library Mission Statement

The Ivy Tech Community College Libraries are full partners in the educational and workforce development mission of the College. The libraries teach research strategies, support the curriculum, and encourage independent and lifelong learning by providing the space, information resources, instruction, and related services essential for academic success. The Libraries advance information literacy, critical thinking, and collaborative learning in a welcoming environment that promotes, and is enriched by, the diverse cultural and intellectual interests of students, faculty, and community.

Public Access and Community Interaction

Ivy Tech Evansville is open to members of our community.  The digital divide is still an issue for many in our area.  This is why most of our computers are available to the public anytime the library is open.  Anyone over the age of 18 can get a 24 hr. JITA (Just In Time Account) to gain access to our computers and printers.  The PCs that are available to the public have internet access, Microsoft Office and Kurzweil.
Community members that come in to the library often use our computers to fill out job applications, apply for government programs, access online education from other institutions, or just to have a safe place to come and access social media.
We also allow Indiana residents to sign up for a Community Borrowers card.  With this card they can check out up to three books from our collection.  This is helpful for those that need materials that are not available in the public library.  Many of those that sign up for the community cards are prospective students that need test prep books.
During the 2017-2018 Academic year the issued 202 JITA accounts and 6 community cards.

The library also works with other groups in the community to promote literacy and life long learning.  We have participated in the public library's One Book, One Community program, as well as other community wide reading programs.  We have also sponsored on campus reading programs that are open to the public.
Library staff are encouraged to participate in volunteer projects within the community.  At time our staff have participated in the Martin Luther King Day of service and volunteered with the United Way.  We also help the Staff Council organize the annual Giving Tree and coordinate collecting and sorting donations.

Information Literacy and Academic Honesty

Information literacy is not only an essential academic skill, it is an essential life skill.  That is why we offer information literacy instruction in a variety of formats.  We offer in class presentations that we can adjust depending on the assignment and the instructor's requirements.  These presentations can also be offered to the Tell City and Princeton sites via the synchronous classroom equipment.
The statewide library system also makes sure that information literacy is not overlooked in our online classes.  We offer access to a product called Credo Instruct.  Credo Instruct is a tool that can be imported directly into IvyLearn.  It consists of a series of video and text tutorials and quizzes that are integrated into the grade book.  Instructors can use all or select parts of the product.
We also have a link a version of Credo Instruct that anyone can access from the A-Z list.  This allows students to view the content even if they are not enrolled in a class that is using it.
In addition to helping students find and analyze, the library also makes sure they understand the importance on citing their sources and giving proper attribution.  We do this by proving access to both the APA and MLA stylebooks, handouts with citation examples, and online tools such as the Purdue OWL and NoodleTools.
