HLC Materials for April 2019: Assurance Argument Statewide Documents

ITCC Libraries "serve the public, not solely the institution, and this entails a public obligation."

1d1-Actions and decisions reflect an understanding that in its educational role the institution serves the public,

not solely the institution, and this entails a public obligation.

“Campus libraries are open to the general public and provide internet access to communities where access to this type of technology is nearly impossible for economic or infrastructural reasons.”

ITCC Libraries are "committed to freedom of expression and the pursuit of truth"

2d-The institution is committed to freedom of expression and

the pursuit of truth in teaching and learning.

“Libraries are among commonly reserved spaces, and their role as both campus and community library also creates the opportunity for dissenting opinions in public spaces. Adding to that potential dissent is the choice of library materials, some of which community members, students, or faculty may find challenging.”

  • The library normally accesses and provides information reflecting a wide variety of viewpoints on religious, political, sexual, social, economic, scientific, and moral issues. No censorship will be exercised on the controversial nature or unpopularity of an author's point of view or mode of expression as it relates to the curricular needs of the College.
  • The Ivy Tech library supports and abides by the American Library Association’s Intellectual        Freedom Statement and interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights

“Faculty and librarians collaborate in the material selection process.”

  • Information Resources Development - While the final selection of information resources will be determined by Campus/Site library staff, the faculty will play a role in the materials selection process. The library staff will work closely with the faculty through:

A. Review and evaluation of current library information resources;

            B. Solicitation of bibliographies, selection aids, lists, and specific titles;

                          C. Regular reviews of curriculum and course syllabi;

              D. Regular communication with individual faculty concerning individual course  needs;

              E. Participation on College committees and task groups.

“Internet access is another public service offered by libraries, particularly in parts of the state where internet access can still prove challenging. Library patrons are free to use internet access to pursue ideas and knowledge of their choice, governed only by policies intended to protect the College and others in the public space from offensive material”

ITCC Libraries "engage(s) students in collecting, analyzing, and communicating information

3b3-Every degree program offered by the institution engages students in collecting, analyzing, and communicating information; in mastering modes of inquiry or creative work; and in developing skills adaptable to changing environments.

“Students are first challenged to think about the collection and use of information, as well how to tailor the skills and knowledge to specific settings in the IVYT courses.  These courses include specific learning outcomes focused on these kinds of skills, including demonstrating “computer literacy skills” and “effective application of…critical thinking.”

ITCC Library Directors and Librarians " integrate community interactions into their routines"

1d3-The institution engages with its identified external constituencies and

communities of interest and responds to their needs as its mission and capacity allow.

Ivy Tech emphasizes external engagement in the way it describes many of its jobs.  Deans, vice presidents, campus chancellors are all expected to integrate community interaction into their routines, ensuring that the College has a steady supply of community guidance and feedback to its leadership.

ITCC Libraries Support the Transfer General Education Core (STGEC) course curriculum and objectives

3a2-The institution articulates and differentiates learning

goals for its undergraduate, graduate, post-baccalaureate,

post-graduate, and certificate programs.

In 2012, the Indiana General Assembly created the Statewide Transfer General Education Core (STGEC), a 30 hour block of credits, encompassing six areas of general education, that described how a general education for an Indiana public institution student should look.  The six areas of learning are written communication, speaking and listening, quantitative reasoning, humanistic and artistic ways of knowing, scientific ways of knowing, and social and behavioral ways of knowing.  As a result, the College adopted the STGEC as its general education model, and it serves as the first set of student learning outcomes that associate level students, or students pursuing transfer pathways, must master.

  • The Statewide Transfer General Education Core (STGEC) course curriculum and objectives are key considerations in the resource development of the statewide electronic database core collection with smooth transfers in mind.
